Savannah _ Georgia Wynn Carter was born in Newnan, GA on March 3, 1923 to Louise Gearreld and George Lumpkin Wynn and died in Savannah on July 4, 2016. She was predeceased by her husband, Julian Laurens Carter, Sr.; her son, William Walton Carter; her son-in-law Robert Sullivan; her grandsons, Wesley Barthelmess and Simon Carter; as well as her parents and sisters Geraldine Wynn Goddard, Louise Wynn Armstrong Bailey, and Josephine Wynn Sowell.
She is survived by her children Georgia Carter Shapiro (Robert) of Newnan, Juliann Carter Barthelmess of Savannah, Julian Laurens Carter, Jr. of Lincolnton, and Wynn Carter Sullivan of Savannah. Her grandchildren surviving her are Robert Hinely (Mary) and Stephen Hinely (Kim) of Newnan, Andrew Barthelmess (Lauren) of Savannah, Mallory and Julian Sullivan of Savannah, and Jill Carter (Eric) Bradley of Spartanburg, SC. Her great grandchildren are Emily and Eli Hinely, and Sarah, Josephine, and Branch Hinely, all of Newnan.
Mrs. Carter was a longtime member of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, where she had served as assistant treasurer and member of the Administrative Board of the Board of Trustees for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Candler Hospital Auxiliary, the Huntingdon Club, the Savannah Chapter of the D.A.R., and the Sisterhood of P.E.O. She loved to travel with friends both to Europe and around the US, but her favorite activity was volunteering in the Candler Hospital gift shop.
Visitation will be held Friday evening, July 8, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors. A private burial will be held in Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be sent to the Building Fund at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, 429 Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA 31401.
